Sweet Itch

This sound file contains the balancing frequencies that relate to bodily functions and complaints that play a role in sweet itch (tail and mane eczema), including the associated functions, emotions, chakras, meridians and other energy systems.

Sweet itch, also known as summer eczema, is caused by an allergic reaction to the bites of Culicoides mosquitoes (midges). The females need blood to lay eggs. When they bite a horse, they inject certain proteins into the skin to prevent blood clotting, which allows them to feed on the blood for longer.

Horses with sweet itch are allergic to these proteins and this allergic reaction causes them to itch enormously, which causing them to rub to reduce the itching. The reason that this itch mainly occurs in the tail and mane is because the midges like to sting in a place where they can reach the skin more easily because the hairs are a bit further apart. Such is the case with a horse’s tail and mane.

The allergic reaction is often caused by another underlying condition, such as Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS), insulin resistance, PPID (Cushing) and laminitis. There is an imbalance. It is important to also treat the underlying condition. In about 20% of cases, heredity plays a role. Some breeds are more susceptible to developing sweet itch, such as Frisians, Shetland pony’s and Icelandic horses, but also other draft horses.

With eczema, it is essential to approach the complaints from the inside. Treating only the skin only solves the problem temporarily, because the autoimmune reaction always comes from within. Sweet itch is therefore pre-eminently a problem to approach holistically. In addition to forms of therapy, it is important to also look at nutrition and stable – pasture management. Midges mainly occur in the period from March to October and especially around sunset.

This sound file can be combined well with the sound files Auto Immune, Allergy, Skin, Immune System, Digestion & Metabolism, Metabolic Syndrome – Insulin Resistance, PPID – Cushing, Laminitis and Detox.
