Dementia is the name for a combination of symptoms (a syndrome), in which the brain can no longer process information properly. In dementia, the nerve cells in the brain break down. The formation of amyloid deposits around the nerve cells in the brain causes the death of nerve cells. Sometimes it is not the nerve cells themselves that break down, but the connections between the cells. It is also possible that the cells and connections are no longer working properly. Due to this decrease in cells, the brain functions less and less well.
In dogs and cats, this condition is also called Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome. This reduces memory, judgment and learning abilities.
Symptoms of dementia include that the animal makes less contact with its environment, they become slower and may appear depressed. The day and night rhythm can change, so that they sleep a lot during the day and become busy or restless at night. They can become confused and, for example, can no longer find their way home or stable. Changes in character and behavior can also occur.
