Dementia is the name for a combination of symptoms (a syndrome), in which the brain can no longer process information properly. In dementia, nerve cells in the brain are damaged. Sometimes it is not the nerve cells themselves that are damaged, but the connections between the cells. It is also possible that the cells and connections are no longer working properly. Due to this decrease in cells, the brain functions deteriorates.
Memory problems are usually noticeable at the beginning of the disease. At a later stage the person with dementia develops problems with thinking and language. One may also have to deal with changes in character and behavior. As the disease progresses, someone with dementia increasingly loses control over their own life.
