if too much is demanded of an animal for a long period of time, we call that a burnout or being overstrained. Â Being overstrained or burned out goes beyond stress and fatigue. It is the result of long-term and systematic ignoring of the stress signals that the animal has previously shown.
With dogs being trained, too much can be asked of the animal. This can be, for example, obedience training or agility, but also dogs that are used professionally such as detection dogs or sniffer dogs and guard dogs. Dogs that go to dog shows often can also be overtrained or burned out. The cause may lie in the age of the animal, that too much is asked for its age, but also the method and frequency of training can be a cause.
Burnout can also occur in cats. For example, in cats that travel a lot and go to shows or exhibitions. Symptoms of a burnout can be that the animal no longer seems to be able to learn something new, it is difficult to make contact with the animal, the physical condition seems to be getting worse instead of better. Due to chronic stress and mental pressure, behavioral changes take place, such as an animal that becomes anxious or aggressive.
In horses, these types of complaints mainly occur in horses of whom too much is asked at too young an age and in sporthorses. Complaints that can occur in horses are fatigue, lethargy and slow recovery. A horse can become leaner because muscle mass is used up. Physical condition decreases instead of increases. The immune system becomes weaker, which can cause infections. In addition to physical complaints, behavioral changes can also take place, such as nervous behavior or being slower and no longer ‘reachable’. In cases of chronic stress and overtraining, the horse is very likely to develop gastric ulcers as well.
