Cushing’s disease is a rare human condition in which a tumor on the pituitary gland produces too much adrenal cortex-stimulating hormone (ACTH). This causes the adrenal gland to produce too much cortisol. Cortisol affects all cells of the body. It is also called the stress hormone because it is released in all situations of stress, both physical stress and psychological stress.
Cushing’s syndrome can develop as a result of cortisol treatment for another condition such as rheumatism, chronic asthma or COPD or after a transplant. Cortisol is then administered in the form of a drug such as prednisone or dexamethasone.
 Complaints often arise over a period of months or even years. Symptoms may include fatigue, weight gain with abnormal fat distribution (abdomen, neck, head, with thin legs), thin fragile skin, easy bruising, poor wound healing, sore muscles and joints and reduced muscle strength, especially in the legs. In addition, people often suffer from psychological complaints such as depression and lability.
Because these symptoms are also common in other conditions, it can sometimes take longer before the correct diagnosis is made.
