Whiplash occurs when the neck is strained by a trauma in which the head is moved forcefully forward and backward, for example as a result of a rear-end collision, and usually involves trauma to muscles, discs, nerves and tendons of the neck. The complaints usually arise within 24 hours after such a trauma and often start with neck and shoulder complaints. Other complaints can be headache, nausea, dizziness and fatigue. Problems can also arise with memory, concentration and sensitivity to light and sound (overstimulation).
The symptoms of whiplash are very similar to those of a concussion and they often occur simultaneously. The recovery period generally gives an indication of which of the two conditions it concerns: in 80-90% of cases a concussion recovers within two weeks, while whiplash often has a recovery time of 4-12 weeks and sometimes even longer, it can even become a chronic condition.
