Physical layer: to support the proper functioning of the muscles. Muscles are everywhere in the body, even in the eyes and skin. Each muscle has its own function such as movement, respiration, digestion. Muscles can be trained, they are important for movement and can be painful, stiff or rigid. Muscles, together with the bones and skin, give shape, strength and protection to the body. When muscles move, heat is released.

There are three types of muscles: striated skeletal muscle, smooth muscle, and cardiac muscle. The striated skeletal muscles are ‘voluntary’ muscles. Skeletal muscles are controlled by neuromuscular signals from the brain that communicate with individual muscle fibers and cause them to contract. In other words, you can consciously control these muscles. They are important for the movement of the skeleton. Smooth muscles and the heart muscle are “involuntary” muscles. Involuntary muscles are muscles that contract or move without conscious control. The autonomic nervous system controls these involuntary muscle movements. Guts and other organs are partly made up of these involuntary muscles. The smooth muscles ensure that blood, oxygen and food are transported through the blood vessels, the digestive tract and the respiratory tract. The heart muscle ensures that blood is pumped around the body.

Energetic layer: in traditional Eastern medicine, the muscles are energetically connected with the meridian system and in particular the spleen meridian. The spleen meridian is responsible for the moisture content of tissues and muscles. A weak spleen energy can cause muscle weakness or even atrophy. Mental complaints can be: worrying, difficulty receiving, giving too much. The spleen is associated with the element earth.
