Edema is an accumulation of fluid in a certain part of the body. This causes the body part to swell. With edema, a pit remains in the skin when you press on a swollen spot. Edema can be harmless, but can also occur after an accident, surgery, radiation, damage or blockage of lymphatic vessels or a serious underlying condition, such as heart failure or kidney failure.
With filled legs, the lower legs are swollen. Filled legs can be caused by reduced fluid and blood flow, by too little exercise, or by an underlying medical problem. This often happens with horses that have been stabled at night. With Einschuss there is an enormous, often painful, swelling in the legs, usually a hind leg due to subcutaneous fluid as a result of inflammation of the subcutaneous tissue. The cause of acute Einschuss is a combination of bacteria that have entered through a wound in the skin and a low or impaired immune system.
